How to Talk to a Live Person at USCIS

USCIS handles most calls through an automated system and its virtual assistant "Emma". Reaching a live agent is possible, but the system is designed to resolve your question automatically first. Here is what actually works.

Step by Step to Reach a Live Agent

  1. Call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 (TTY 1-800-767-1833).
  2. Select your language and listen to the first menu. Do not mash zero: the system may loop or disconnect.
  3. When the automated assistant asks what you need, clearly say "speak to a representative" or describe an issue the bot cannot solve (for example, "my case is outside normal processing time").
  4. If offered a callback, take it. USCIS uses a callback system during high-volume hours, so you keep your place in line without waiting on hold.
  5. Tier 1 agents handle general questions. If your issue needs case-specific action, ask them to escalate to a Tier 2 immigration services officer, who returns your call, usually within 24-72 hours.

Best Times to Call

The Contact Center operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. Shortest waits are typically early morning (8-9 a.m. ET) and midweek (Tuesday to Thursday). Mondays and lunchtime hours are the busiest.

Have This Ready Before Calling

Faster Alternatives for Common Questions

Case status can be checked instantly online with your receipt number, and many updates (like address changes) can be done from a myUSCIS account without calling. If your case is at a local office, some issues are resolved faster with an in-person emergency appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I email USCIS instead of calling?

For most case types there is no public email. The main channels are the Contact Center (1-800-375-5283), your myUSCIS account inbox, and e-Request for certain issues like non-delivery of documents.

Does USCIS call back from a specific number?

Tier 2 officers often call from unlisted or blocked numbers. If you requested a callback, answer calls from unknown numbers during the window they gave you.
